Review
As a naturist sci-fi novel this book succeeds on both accounts.
It presents some compelling concepts to reflect upon. The story itself revolves around an exploration team visiting another planet using a portal from Earth.
The portals themselves provide the basis for the sci-fi elements of the book. I found much of the appeal and draw of the storyline was discovering along with the exploration team, what the portals are. Who might have set them up and why.
From this perspective the book is somewhat of a page turner as the mystery deepens.
The only minor criticisms of the book are that the dialogue is a little choppy and sparse in places. Certain passages I had trouble following who the speaker was. I didn’t feel any great attachment to individual characters either. Despite their situation and the challenges each of them faced, I didn’t personally feel a great deal of character building going on.
I feel as though the book presents some solid observations to reflect upon. Two themes in particular offered food for thought. The first was dealing with body freedom and the significant role clothing has. The second was people’s relationship with the environment and technology. There’s a subtle hint at the ancient wisdom indigenous societies had prior to domination by western culture and ideals.
Conclusion
If you’re the least bit curious I’d definitely pick up this book and read it. I’m considering the second instalment to see where the story goes next.
